Into the Future of SID

The Beginning:
Sports Information Director Class 2013-2014
I've been in the sports information director class for the past two year, along with a video class my sophomore year. I originally started in E-communications as a freshman wanted to go into web design, but then when we were required to take a quarter of every strand in E-comm I realized that I really enjoyed the video aspect of E-comm more than web design. Over the past three years I have learned a substantial amount of information that is hard to sum up in just three ideas. Particularly in SID we have done so much with writing stories to making video news packages, but overall we have learned a great deal.

Spring Sports Promo
The Present:
Last Year in the Sports Information Director program, we focused a lot about writing and video editing. Last year i created the Spring Sports Promo.
I spent lots of time on it and learned a lot along the way.

1. Making my stories have more voice and content.
A Shooting Stohr Article
This semester we did a lesson on how to make our stories more interesting and content filled. For example, adding links, subtitles, and bolding people's names to draw the reader in to an important part of the story. Also embedding pictures and/or videos into our story, but not saying the exact same thing in both, makes the reader want to know more about your subject. The story I wrote where i feel I expressed a substantial amount of voice was on Hannah Stohr, a basketball player at ONW.A Shooting Stohr told about her life and journey through basketball and what she wants to do in the future with her basketball talent. I used links, bolded peoples names, and embedded pictures of Stohr.

2. Getting better video shots (close-ups and six shot system).
This year we learned that close-ups are a absolute necessity. They create the story and help the audience become more drawn in. Using the six shot system give the reader or audience a better feel of the surroundings and setting of the video, it also helps introduce the character or characters. The very first project of the year was to make a audio slideshow of someone in our class. We were required to use the six shot system when taking the pictures of our person. I did Doug Pearson, getting close ups on his face, hands and the mouse he was using to do his project on the computer.

3. Being more creative in my projects.
This year Mr. Allam challenged me with the task of making the intro for the fall sports Game day Northwest segment on ONW NOW. It took a great deal of creativity to complete this task. It included collecting all pieces of video from each beat, favoriting and combining all clips, and using creativity to figure out what effects and how to make the intro interesting or "cool" for the viewers.
Final Cut Pro Editing Gymnastics Banquet Video
I also spent a lot of my time this semester creating a end of the year banquet video for the ONW Gymnastics team. We had a regular picture slide show then we had a surprise video at the end that was made with the team. This video was called My Gymnastics Team. It was a very time committing project but it was worth it in the end.

In conclusion I feel I improved a lot and all of the work I put into my projects made them turn out the way they did. Even though I feel I improved the semester, there are some goals I have for the next semester.

In the Future:

1. Do more outside filming:
During the first semester I did not participate in very much outside filming due to gymnastics season, but I feel obligated to film more outside of school rather than just to edit the film other people went out and got.

2. Create more written stories:
I have created a lot of video stories this year, rather than written stories. I just recently started to do written stories that I could have been doing all year long.

Final thoughts:
Over the course of this year I feel I have improved and grown more through my work than last year with the promo's i've done, my written stories, and my video packages, and I've had fun along the way and hope to improve through out the next semester.
